We want to identify gifted and talented pupils from across our Partnership who have Special Educational Needs, both within our special schools and units and our mainstream primary and secondary schools. Our aim is to identify two strands of pupils, those with SEN where there are recognised development pathways such as wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and swimming and those with SEN where those pathways are yet to be developed.
We are working on a project called Playground to Podium (P2P) which is a national strategy for identifying, developing and supporting talented young disabled athletes and our aim is to form clear pathways from PE and participation to high level performance and competition. The focus is young people with either physical disability, visual or hearing impairment or severe learning disability and the specific sports are wheelchair basketball, table tennis, boccia, athletics, football (only visual impairment) and swimming.
There will be a multi sports talent Identification Day in the summer term/Autumn term where identified students will be directed to the County Assessment Centre for a more formal assessment/
Another scheme we are rolling out this year is called the Panathlon Challenge. The aim is to work with those students with learning difficulties and/or poor coordination and is more multi-skill based. We will hold our own festival on the 3rd March and from this we will invite a team to enter the West Kent Penathlon Festival April 28th 2010, The KENT finals will be held at the Mallings School May 26th 2010.
