WARM UP IDEAS

The purpose of a warm up is to mentally and physically prepare the students to perform.

In order to do that they need to have:

  • Good blood supply to their brain and working muscles (achieved through running, jumping games etc. aerobic)
  • A good range of movement at the joints (achieved through specific stretching and flexibility work-mobility)
  • Lesson specific activity e.g. strength work (gymnastics), ball work (invasion, striking and fielding games)

Beans Game

The Leader calls out different types of beans:

Jumping beans - jumpRunner beans - runBroad beans - stand still and wideGreen beans - tall thin bodiesJelly beans - shakeBaked beans - lay flat on the floorFrench beans - call out "oh la la"

Tape Recorder Game

Children respond to the following commands:

Play - walk around the hallFast Forward - runRewind - walk backwardsPause - stand perfectly stillEject - star jump

Numbers Game

Children move around to a chosen command such as:

Walk - Jog - Hop - Skip - Jump - Side Step - Walk backward

The Leader then calls out a group size and the children moving around the room have to get into that size team as quickly as possible.  The bigger group size you call out the more fun and frantic the game becomes.
