Paralympian Danny Crates launched the borough’s first Young Ambassador programme at the Woodville Halls, Gravesend on 17 March.
Danny Crates is a gold medal winning Paralympic athlete and World Cup winner for the 800m. Danny was selected to carry the Olympic Torch in the 2008 Opening Ceremony in Beijing. He is an Ambassador for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and been a commentator at the Paralympic events.
The Mayor of Gravesham, Councillor Bronwen McGarrity introduced the Gold medal winner who addressed more than 200 selected young people from schools across Gravesham chosen as Young Sports Ambassadors by the School Sports Partnership who run the scheme. Danny’s presentation was both inspirational and very entertaining.
The Conference brought together Ambassadors aged from nine to 19 years to take part in London 2012 themed team challenges and learn about the role they are taking on and the Leadership Academy that the Ambassadors belong to. Volunteering, inspiring and leading projects within the school and community are key examples of the work the Ambassadors will carry out.
The next step for our Young Ambassadors is to spread the excitement of London 2012 using the GO FOR IT programme inspired by the Kent 20in12 Executive creating an educational, cultural and sporting journey for everyone involved.
